Guesthouse or Resort? How to Choose Where to Stay in the Maldives

Two completely different holidays, both called "the Maldives"

Guesthouse or Resort? How to Choose Where to Stay in the Maldives

Here's something nobody tells you before you start planning: there are basically two Maldives. There's the honeymoon-brochure Maldives of private islands and overwater villas, and there's the backpacker-friendly Maldives of local islands and guesthouses. Same country, same stunning water. Totally different trips, and a price gap that'll make your eyes water.

Neither is "better." It depends entirely on what you want. Let's sort it out.

The Resort Experience

A Maldivian resort is its own private island. You arrive by speedboat or seaplane, and from that moment everything is handled. Your villa, your meals, your activities, the lot. It's seamless, romantic, and gloriously cut off from the world. Overwater villas with steps into the lagoon, butlers, spa pavilions, multiple restaurants.

The trade-offs: it's expensive (often $500-2,000+ a night), you're largely confined to one island, and it's a bit of a bubble. You won't see much of actual Maldivian life. Perfect for honeymoons, anniversaries, and pure switch-off relaxation.

The Guesthouse Experience

Guesthouses sit on inhabited local islands, and they cracked the Maldives wide open after 2009. For $40-100 a night you get a comfortable room, you eat at local cafés, you book excursions at a fraction of resort prices, and, crucially, you actually meet Maldivians and see how they live.

The trade-offs: local islands are conservative (modest dress, alcohol only on offshore "floating bars" or designated spots, swimwear confined to bikini beaches), and you don't get the private-island fantasy. But you get authenticity, value, and freedom.

The Best of Both: Stay Local, Visit Luxury

Here's the move savvy travelers make. Base yourself in a guesthouse to keep costs down, then buy a resort day pass when you want a hit of five-star living. You get the infinity pool, the beach, and the buffet for a few hours, without the four-figure room bill.

Quick Decision Guide

  • Honeymoon or special occasion, budget no object? Resort.
  • Want value, culture, and to meet locals? Guesthouse.
  • Traveling with kids on a budget? Guesthouse, with the odd resort day pass as a treat.
  • Want total privacy and zero planning? Resort.
  • Can't decide? Split your trip. A few nights of each is the perfect combo.

Whatever you choose, the water's the same shade of unreal blue. That part doesn't change with the price tag.
