Parasailing in the Maldives: The Best View You'll Ever Get

Strap in, lift off, and watch the whole atoll unfold beneath you

You know how every Maldives photo looks slightly fake? Those concentric rings of blue. Deep navy fading to electric turquoise fading to pale aqua over the sandbar? From the ground, you only catch hints of it. From a parasail, you see the whole thing at once. And it stops you cold.

Parasailing is one of those activities that sounds scarier than it is. You're strapped into a harness beneath a big parachute, a boat tows you, and you rise gently into the air. There's no jumping, no freefall. Just a slow, smooth lift into the quietest view in the country.

What It's Actually Like

The takeoff is gentle. The boat accelerates and the canopy fills, lifting you off the deck (or the water) without a jolt. Then it goes calm. Up at 40-50 meters, the engine noise fades and it's just you, the breeze, and an entire atoll spread out below. Boats look like toys. Sandbanks glow. If you're lucky, you'll spot a turtle or a ray cruising the shallows.

Who Can Do It?

Pretty much anyone. You don't need to swim well. You're harnessed and wearing a life jacket the whole time. Most operators offer tandem flights, so nervous first-timers can go up with a partner. Kids can usually join an adult. If you have back or heart issues, or you're pregnant, sit this one out and check with the operator.

Getting the Shot

This is one of the most photogenic things you can do in the Maldives, so plan for it:

  • Strap your camera or phone securely. A floating wrist strap is a lifesaver over open water.
  • Shoot straight down for that surreal sandbank-and-rings look.
  • Go an hour or two before sunset for warm, golden light and softer colors.
  • Many boats have a mounted camera. Ask, and you can just enjoy the ride.

Make a Half-Day of It

Parasailing only takes 20-30 minutes in the air, so it pairs perfectly with other water toys. The fun packages bundle it with a jet ski and a tube ride for a full afternoon of adrenaline.

Maafushi runs the most parasailing trips, but you'll find it on other water-sports islands too. Either way, do it once. You'll understand why people fall in love with this place.
