Mention the Maldives and most people picture flat, mirror-calm lagoons. Surfers know better. On the outer edges of the atolls, where the open Indian Ocean swell wraps around the reefs, the Maldives serves up warm-water waves that rival anywhere in the world, and without the brutal crowds of Bali or the freezing water of a lot of famous breaks.
When to Go
Surf season runs roughly March to October, when the southwest monsoon sends consistent swell to the central and northern atolls. Peak power is usually June to September. The waves are mostly reef breaks, so they range from mellow, beginner-friendly rollers to fast, hollow walls for the experienced.
The Classic Breaks of North Malé Atoll
The most accessible surf is in North Malé Atoll, home to legendary breaks like:
- Cokes and Chickens. Fast, world-class waves off Thulusdhoo island.
- Sultans and Honkys. Powerful, high-quality right-handers.
- Jailbreaks. A long, perfect wall near an island that once held a prison.
Thulusdhoo: The Surf Town
The real game-changer was guesthouse tourism reaching Thulusdhoo. Once you had to book a pricey surf charter boat or a resort to reach these waves; now you can stay cheaply on the island itself, walk to the break, and paddle out. Thulusdhoo (also home to a Coca-Cola factory, which is how "Cokes" got its name) is the heart of the local-island surf scene.
Not surfing? The island's house reef is excellent for diving too, so there's plenty to do on flat days or for non-surfing travel partners.
Tips for Surfing the Maldives
- Mind the reef. These are reef breaks over shallow coral. Wear booties, know the tide, and don't surf above your level.
- Bring or rent a board. Local guesthouses and surf camps sort rentals, but quality varies.
- Respect the line-up. Local and traveling surfers share these waves; don't drop in.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard are essential under that equatorial sun.
- Beginners: look for the mellower, sandy-bottom options and take a lesson before tackling the famous reef breaks.
Uncrowded, warm, and ridiculously scenic. Once you've surfed the Maldives, it's hard to go back to a cold, packed line-up at home.
